Lately we have talked about Outbound Links and In Links but we saved the best for last…BackLinks. BackLinks are the links pointing to your site from another website and they are important to rankings because search engines view them as if they are a vote for your site. The more backlinks you have the more credible your site becomes and the more comfortable search engines are with moving you towards the top of the SERPs (Search Engine Results Page). The caveat to this is that poor quality links will hurt you. You need to be careful.
Types of BackLinks vary with the valuable ones being those with some relevancy to you and those with the most credibility of their own. Think of them like a political endorsement. If you were a politician would you rather have an endorsement from Don’s Bagel Emporium or from the New York Times? It takes a lot of bagel shops to equal one NYTimes.
Getting links can range from fairly easy (your friends) to almost impossible (NYTimes). In between you’ll find some easy pickings, some not so easy pickings and some firms who will offer to locate links for you (might be good), those who promote link building schemes (not so good), and those who offer 1000 links for $100 (really, really bad). Before hiring anyone to provide you BackLinks do some research on “link building” and get a feel for what to expect.
