Energy Efficiency Furnaces – What to Look For
Each new furnace sold has a yellow EnergyGuide label. On this label, look for the “Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency” (AFUE) rating – it will range from 80% (the minimum efficiency allowed by 2013 regulations) to 98.5% (the highest efficiency rating currently available). This ratio signifies the amount of fuel that is turned into
usable heat, so the higher the number the better the efficiency. You may pay a little more up front for those high percentages, but your savings over time will be much greater.
How Efficient is Your Furnace?
If your furnace is more than 15 years old, chances are it is pretty inefficient. If it is even a few years old, a new model could be better since the standards for efficiency changed as recently as 2013. Also, if your current furnace has a pilot light instead of an electric ignition like many of the newer ones have, you are paying for a lot of wasted gas all year long. Replacing that old unit with a high-efficiency gas furnace will pay for itself in no time with all the savings you will see on your energy bills.
