TPO stands for THermoplastic Polyolefin which is a single-ply roofing membrane that covers the surface of the roof.  There can be a slight pitch to the roof for this material. It is a type of rubber that has a capacity to stretch with the cold/hot cycles this area is subject to.  TPO roofs will generally get 20 years of life.  PVC roofs typically have about five more years of life than a TPO roof.  It is made of two layers of PVC roof material with polyester added in between the layers to act as a reinforcement.  The layers in a PVC roof include additives to make the material flexible, UV stable and to prevent curing.

There are other types such as EPDM which is a durable synthetic runner roofing membrane (ethylene propylene diene terpolymer) widely used in low-slope roofs.  Its two primary ingredients, ethylene and propylene, are derived from oil and natural gas.  Life expectancy is 22 to 35 years.  Some other specialty roofs such as IB can go over 40 years without issue on flat roofs.
